13 A Practiced Eye

Ill Fitting

“The length of these robes. I’m not sure I like it. They feel too long,” Jhee said.

“They wear their robes longer inland,” Kanto replied. “Presumably, because it’s drier.”

“I don’t imagine they do a lot of wading like we did back home.”

“Yet, somehow you managed it. Also, please, don’t give them away this time.”

Jhee looked in the mirror at her gorgeous robes, and she looked at Mirrei’s robe sitting on another chair unused.

“Don’t worry,” Jhee said, “she’ll be here. I’ll talk to her.”

“Don’t. Don’t. Let her have her fun. You’re right. I’m being selfish. She never got out much, and she has a right to live it up a little. Like I always thought we would once we got to the city.”

“I thought you wanted to attend the festivals and galas.”

“I did. I do. Just not alone. I wanted us to attend together as a family. I know you were just flattering me at the observatory. I want to introduce you to new experiences, so hopefully, you can appreciate them like I do. Think of our lessons, how you taught me about how to recognize the feel and movements of the different elements.”

“Tell you what? Why don’t I attend one of these with you?”

“Jhee, you’d hate it. It’s gossip and schmoozing. You barely made it through the fundraiser.”

“Maybe I’m not looking at it properly. I do like to people watch and figure out the relationships between people. So, I’ll go to people watch.”

“Thank you, Jhee.”

Kanto started pinning the robes. Jhee thought through the case out loud. “We’ve got one murdered fiancé. Possibly having an affair and who is caught or at least suspected by one dead event organizer. The inquester thinks it’s possible it was a case of mistaken identity. The Gray Galleon project was very controversial, and there is also evidence Ms. Oriel was misusing Findari, the Failed Prototypes, antiquities. Maybe someone killed her and strung her up to find out which unauthorized people she let see them.”

“It does sound plausible. Struck over the head in the dark. They do have similar body types.”

“That is my assessment as well. Make the pockets higher. Conchs are getting bigger and heavier. They pull down and hang too low.”

“I’m proud of you, Jhee. Old you would have simply dealt with it. Also, we must fix it, so it doesn’t distort the lines and designs of the robes as well. I can’t have you looking like some marine rustic. I would never live down the shame. My denbe will be the most stylish well-appointed official at court, or else the Trench will have more residents. I’ll put my mind to the length dilemma later. What is it you say Mr. Bastian did for a living?”

“An engineer. Though, more recently, he offered his services as an event walker until he met Ms. Oriel. He may have also found some work as a sire.”

“Unsurprising.”

“You knew.”

“Suspected. Body language. His positioning with respect to her. Always ready with an arm when she entered or exited a room.
